US - Guterres: States to facilitate the presence of naval personnel stranded at sea

The head of the UN, Antonio Guterres, today called on all countries to facilitate the replacement of sailors, as hundreds of thousands of them are stranded at sea due to restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Hundreds of thousands out of two million people in this profession have been stranded at sea for months," Guterres said.

"Unable to leave the ships, these sailors have exceeded the maximum presence at sea, provided for in international conventions. "Some sailors have been there for 15 months," he said.

Guterres stressed that maritime transport represents more than 80% of trade and is essential for the transport of medicines, food and important goods in the fight against the pandemic.
