More than 40 million cases of the new coronavirus have been officially registered worldwide, according to official data.

More than 2.5 million cases of COVID-19 have been recorded in the last seven days, the highest balance in a week since the pandemic began.

In total, at least 40 000 234 cases, of which 1 113 896 deaths have been registered.

More than half of the cases were recorded in the US, India and Brazil, the third most affected country with 8 154 935 cases (219 674 deaths), 7 550 273 cases (114 610 deaths) and 5 235 344 cases respectively ( 153 905 dead).

The increase in contamination can be partly explained by the significant increase in tests conducted in a large number of countries.
