GERMANY - Merkel: Foreign firms should be treated equally in China

German Chancellor Angela Merkel today demanded equal treatment of Germans and other foreign firms operating in China, during a video conference with Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang.

"Chancellor Merkel called on Prime Minister Li to give foreign companies better access to the Chinese market, one of Germany's most important trading partners," said Chancellor Steffen Seibert.

Merkel said further steps were needed to improve the status of foreign firms in the country, and stressed the importance of establishing an ambitious EU-China investment agreement.

The German Chancellor also stressed Germany's interest in maintaining rule-based multilateral trade, strengthening the World Trade Organization (WTO) and continuing stable bilateral relations.
